To decapitate someone is to cut off their head. It is a hard, formal, almost technical word — news, history, and horror use it; a child would say “cut off his head.” In the past, executioners did this with an axe or a guillotine. Though actually, journalists also use it for groups: to “decapitate” a gang or a company means to remove the leader, not to use a blade. That stretch is common in the news. Do not use it for a small cut on the head, and do not mix it up with money “capital.”
