Dated, in this sense, means old-fashioned: it shows its year. Clothes, hair, jokes, computer design, even a way of speaking can be dated — not wrong, just no longer in style. It can be kinder than calling something ugly; you are saying it belongs to an earlier time. A thing can be dated and still loved, or dated and ready to be put away. This is not the same as they dated last year (went out as a couple), and not the same as the letter was dated 3 May (had that day written on it). Those are other jobs of the same spelling.
