Darwinian means belonging to, coming from, or like Charles Darwin and his ideas — not the man’s own name. Darwin (1809–1882) was a British scientist who argued that plants and animals change slowly over a very long time, and that the ones better suited to their surroundings are more likely to live and have young. He called this natural selection, and he wrote about it in On the Origin of Species. So a Darwinian explanation of a bird’s asks how that shape helped the bird eat and survive. People also stretch Darwinian, even about business or school, to mean a hard fight where only the “strong” last. Though actually Darwin’s own idea was about fitting an environment, not about cartoon strength, and using the word as a for “cruel” is loose. As a noun, a Darwinian is someone who supports those ideas. There is a quieter second use too: Darwinian can mean “of Darwin”, the city in northern Australia, or a person who lives there, because that city was named after the same scientist.
組成From Darwin + -ian (“belonging to, relating to, or like”). Darwin is the surname of Erasmus Darwin (1731–1802) and his grandson Charles Darwin (1809–1882). The city of Darwin in Australia was named after Charles Darwin, which gives the later “of that city” sense.
