    Darwin is a city in the far north of Australia, on the coast. It is the capital of the Northern Territory and an important port. The weather is hot, with a wet season and a dry season, quite unlike the cooler south of the country. In English it is a place name, so we say in Darwin, to Darwin. The city is named after Charles Darwin, the British scientist, though actually the place is not “about” his theory of how living things change — it is simply his name on the map. Cyclones have badly damaged the city more than once, and people have had to build it again. Do not picture it as an English town; it is Australian, tropical, and a gateway to the north.

組成From Middle English Darwin, Derwin, from Old English Dēorwine, from dēore (“dear”) + wine (“friend”). The Australian city is named after Charles Darwin. The surname is also recorded as a variant of Derwent.
