    A dactyl is a small rhythm unit in poetry. It is a group of three where the first one is strong and the next two are weak: STRONG-weak-weak. Say 'carefully' or 'happily' or 'elephant' out loud and you can hear it — CARE-ful-ly, EL-e-phant. The first beat lands hard, then the sound falls away. Poets use it because it makes a rolling, galloping feeling, quite different from the more common English pattern of weak-STRONG (as in 'a-BOVE', 'to-DAY'). This is a technical word from the study of poetry, so you will meet it in a literature class or a book about poems, not in daily conversation. In older books about Greek and Latin poetry you may see it described as one LONG sound followed by two SHORT ones, because those languages counted the length of a syllable rather than its loudness; in English we hear it as stress instead. A dactyl is the mirror image of an anapaest (weak-weak-STRONG).

組成Borrowed from Latin dactylus, from Ancient Greek δάκτυλος (dáktulos), meaning 'finger'. The name is a picture: look at your finger and you see one long bone then two short ones — one long syllable then two short ones. It is a doublet of 'dactylus' and 'date' (the fruit), and possibly of 'digit'.
