    A pterodactyl was a large animal that could fly, living many millions of years ago. Its wings were skin, held out by a very long fourth finger — that is why the name is ‘wing-finger’. Films and children often call it a dinosaur. Though actually, scientists put it with the pterosaurs: flying reptiles that lived at the same time as dinosaurs, not inside the dinosaur family. The p at the start is silent in English (tero-dactyl), like the p in psychology. In careful science you may hear pterosaur for the whole group; pterodactyl is the famous everyday word, and it also names one well-known kind.
