Cyberchondria is a fear that you are seriously ill — a fear that starts or gets worse because you keep reading about diseases on the internet. You type one symptom, a page shows a scary illness, you read more, your heart beats harder, so you search again. The older word for this kind of health-worry (not only online) is hypochondria; this is that worry with a computer in the middle. Doctors and newspapers use cyberchondria. It began as a clever blend, almost a joke in the word-shape, but the feeling is real and not funny when you are in it. Though actually, it does not mean “you are making it up on purpose.” It means the searching and the fear are feeding each other. Looking up a real illness you already have is not this word.

組成Blend of cyber- + hypochondria. cyber- comes from cybernetic, from Ancient Greek kubernētikós; here it means “on the internet.” hypochondria is the older name for worrying that you are ill. The middle of hypochondria is squeezed so cyber- can sit on the front.
