Hypochondria is the habit of mind where a person keeps fearing they are ill, even when tests and doctors keep saying they are not. A small becomes a terrible disease in their thoughts; they check their body, search for symptoms, and find it hard to trust a “you are fine.” It is a real kind of health anxiety, not just being careful. Though actually, people also use it loosely and , as if the person were only being silly, which is tidier than the truth: the fear feels genuine to them. The old medical story placed the trouble in the upper belly (the hypochondrium), which is why the word looks so bodily. Today we talk about the worry, not that patch of cartilage.

組成From New Latin hypochondria, the morbid condition once thought to sit in the hypochondrium, the upper part of the abdomen under the ribs. Greek hypo- (under) + chondros (cartilage).
