This word is used in more than one way, which is why get tangled. The idea is always the same: using the internet, apps, or text messages to scare, shame, or insult someone on purpose — not just one sharp remark, but harm that follows the person around. Some people use cyberbully for that whole activity (the sense this entry is filed under). Though actually, in a lot of school English, cyberbully is the person who does it, and the activity is called cyberbullying. You will also hear it as a verb: “Don’t cyberbully her.” Teachers, news, and safety talks use all three, and they all point at the same ugly habit. The word is modern and not fancy, but the meaning is serious.

組成From cyber- + bully. cyber- comes from cybernetic, from Ancient Greek kubernētikós; here it means “on the internet or by phone message.” bully is the older word for picking on someone weaker.
