A cyberattack is when someone uses computers and the internet to break into, steal, lock, or wreck information that is not theirs. The hit is code, not a fist: copying files, shutting a hospital’s screens, or freezing a company’s work until money is paid. It can be one person or a group, and the target can be a school laptop or a whole country’s systems. News and IT people use this word a lot; in ordinary talk someone may just say “we got hacked.” It is usually a noun (a cyberattack). Some speakers also use it as a verb (to cyberattack a system), though that sounds a little heavier and more headline-like. Formal in reports; common in headlines. Though actually, not every nasty thing online is a cyberattack — a rude message is not the same as breaking a system.
組成From cyber- + attack. cyber- comes from cybernetic, from Ancient Greek kubernētikós (about steering / control); in English cyber- now just means “on computers or the internet.” attack is the strike.
