Cybercrime is crime that needs computers or the internet to work: stealing from an online bank, breaking into systems, selling people’s private data, fake shops, some kinds of identity theft. A robbery in the street is crime; the same stealing done with code and inboxes is cybercrime. Police, news, and law people use this word. It is a wide umbrella — many different illegal acts, not one trick. Though actually, older crimes did not vanish; fraud, threats, and theft found a new street to happen on. A single break-in is often called a cyberattack or a hack; cybercrime is the whole illegal area those acts belong to. The word is serious and official-sounding, at home in headlines and police reports.
