In boxing, a cruiserweight is a fighter in the class between light heavyweight and heavyweight. This dictionary puts the top of that class at 86.18 kilograms (about 190 pounds): heavier than a light heavyweight, but not yet a heavyweight. The name borrows “cruiser”, a kind of fast warship that sits between smaller and larger ships, and adds “weight”, as other boxing classes do. Though actually, not every boxing body uses the same number on the scale; some now allow a little more, up to around 90 kilograms. In some places you will also hear “junior heavyweight” for the same idea. It is a sports word. You do not need it unless you follow fights. Other combat sports have borrowed the class name, but boxing is its home.
