A sport shoe you can wear for more than one kind of exercise — a bit of running, jumping, gym machines — without changing shoes. It is not a thin racing shoe and not a heavy football boot. It sits in the middle: built to do several jobs, not one job perfectly. Though actually, in a gym “cross-trainer” is also the machine you stand on and push with your legs and arms. That is not this word here. This one is the shoe.
