A cross-reference is a short note that sends you somewhere else in the same book (or set of notes) for more — another page, heading, or entry. Dictionaries are full of them (“see also…”). That pointing note is the tidy, older meaning. You can also use it as a verb: to put those notes in, or to check two lists against each other. In offices the verb has grown a little looser: people say they will cross-reference two files, meaning they will match the information, not only print “see page 9.” Both uses are real; the noun is still the note.
