    When a book or a writer cross-refers, they tell the reader to look at another place — another page, section, or entry — for more. You meet this in school books, dictionaries, and manuals more than in stories. The verb is what the text does: it points you across. Its close partner is the noun cross-reference (the note itself). Though actually, many people now use “cross-reference” as the verb too, and that is very common. “Cross-refer” stays a little more and thin.
