Crofting is the system of farming on crofts in Scotland — the way of life, and the rules around that small rented land. It is not just “farming” in general, and it is not a word you use for farms in other countries. People say crofting communities for the places where this still goes on. The same shape of the word can also be the -ing form of the verb (they are crofting), but the sense here is the system, not only the action of this minute.
