A crofter is someone who lives on a croft and works that small piece of Scottish land. It is a Scottish word for a kind of small farmer, often one who rents the land rather than owning a big farm. It is not a general English word for any farmer, and it is not related to craft in the sense of making things by hand, even though can spell the farm-word craft. You will mostly meet it in writing about the Highlands and islands.
