A croft is a very small farm in Scotland, especially in the Highlands and islands. It is not just any little farm: the word belongs to a Scottish way of life. A family lives on a small piece of land, grows some food, and often keeps a few animals. In the old days the land was usually rented, and the word still carries that Scottish world with it. You will not hear people in England or America call their garden a croft. There is also a verb to croft, “to farm in this way,” built from the noun, but the noun is the sense you will meet first.

組成From Middle English croft, from Old English croft, “an enclosed field.” Further back is uncertain. Old cousins appear in Dutch and German for enclosed farmland; Scots also has croft and craft with this meaning. The verb comes from the noun.
