Croatian is not the name of the country. The country is Croatia, on the Adriatic, with as its capital; it was part of Yugoslavia until 1991. Croatian is the word for the people, the language, and anything that belongs to that country. So you can eat Croatian food, meet a Croatian friend, or study Croatian. As a noun, a Croatian is a person from Croatia, and Croatian is also the language spoken there — a South Slavic language, close to Serbian and Bosnian, though people care a lot about those names. The pair works like Italy / Italian. It is a normal nationality word: maps and news use Croatia; people and language class use Croatian.
組成From Croat + -ian, or from Croatia + -an. The ending marks “of that place or people.”
