Wiktionary traces the word to Middle English crist-crosse, crists-crosse, literally 'Christ's cross', and notes that by surface analysis it looks like an apophonic reduplication of cross. The doubling in the form matches the doubling in the meaning: not one cross, but crossing repeated.
