    Something credible deserves to be believed, or can be trusted. A credible story sounds possible and well supported; a credible witness is someone people trust to tell the truth; a credible threat is one you have to take seriously. The word is about how something is, not about money (that is credit), and not about being too ready to believe anything (that is — almost the opposite feeling). Incredible began as “not credible,” though people now stretch it to mean “.” Credible is a calm, slightly formal word you meet in news, police reports, and school essays.
