If you do something craftily, you do it in a clever, planned way, and you hide the real aim. You wait. You smile. You move when nobody is watching. The word is not a simple compliment: it says the person is smart, but a little sneaky, and other people may be tricked. You hear it in stories (a fox moving craftily) and in ordinary talk when someone gets what they want without saying so out loud. It is not very formal, and it is not kind if you use it about a friend who will hear you. Though actually, it is just the adverb of , and itself grew out of craft, an old word for skill. So the shape of the word still says “with skill,” but the feeling in today’s English is “with a secret plan.” If you only mean “with great skill,” is the safer word.
