Crabgrass is a rough grass that spreads low and fast over the ground. treat it as a weed: it pushes into a nice lawn and is hard to pull out because it roots as it goes. You see the word most in American garden talk. In everyday English people may just say weed unless they care about lawns. It is a plain plant name, not slang, and not a scientific name you need to learn. It likes heat and open soil, so it shows up in summer more than in a neat winter lawn.
