    A cowhand is a person whose job is to look after cattle — riding, herding, fences, the daily ranch work. It is a plainer, slightly older or more workmanlike cousin of cowboy: it does not shout “film hero,” and it does not say whether the person is a man or a woman. Hand here means a worker, as in , not a body part. Some people think the word is simply cow + hand; others think it may be a blend of cowboy and . Either way, you are naming the hired rider, not the owner of the ranch (that is closer to rancher). You will meet it in westerns and in talk about American cattle country. It is not a British farm word in everyday use.
