A cowboy is a man, traditionally, whose job is to take care of cattle, often on a horse - the classic image is from the American West, wearing a hat and boots. Today, people also use 'cowboy' , often a bit negatively, to describe someone who does risky or careless work without following proper rules, like 'cowboy builders' who do sloppy construction work.
