A cowgirl is, in the United States, a woman whose work is with cattle: she rides a horse, moves the herd, and knows the ranch. The word was built to sit beside cowboy — same job, named for a woman. In real ranch life people also just say cowboy for anyone in that work, or hand, or rancher; cowgirl is the form that marks the rider as female, and it is also the picture you get in films, rodeos, and children’s dress-up (hat, boots, maybe a toy horse). It can sound warm and slightly story-like. It is American in flavour; Britain has farm words, but this one belongs to the western. It does not mean a girl who likes cows, and it is not only a costume, though that is often the first picture a meets.
組成cow + girl: the animals in her care + a word that marks her as a woman. Built the same way as cowboy.
