If something is counterproductive, it does not merely fail. It helps the opposite of what you wanted. You shout to make a child quiet, and the child shouts more: that is counterproductive. You cut sleep to get more work done, and you do worse work: same idea. It is a grown-up, slightly formal word, common in advice, offices, and news, but the idea is everyday. People sometimes use it as a heavy way to say 'bad idea', even when the thing is only useless, not backwards. Though actually 'not helpful' is unproductive; counterproductive is stronger — it works against you.

組成counter- (against / the opposite way) + productive (making a result). The long family tree is the same counter- as in contrary, plus the produce family.
