    Cosmogony is the origin of the universe — or a set of ideas about how it began. That set of ideas might be scientific (a Big Bang kind of story) or it might be a culture’s old story: a god speaking the world into being, a world born from an egg, and so on. The word is academic. Ordinary people say “the beginning of the universe” or “a creation story.” Though actually, it sits next to cosmology and people mix them. Cosmogony is about birth and origin. Cosmology is the wider science of how the universe is built and how it behaves. A creation myth is a cosmogony; measuring the age of the universe is cosmology.
