Correctional is an adjective for the world of punishing people who have broken the law — prisons, places that hold young offenders, and the officers who work there. In American English especially, a “correctional facility” is a prison, and a “correctional officer” is a prison guard. The word is a bit of official : “correction” sounds like making someone right again, not just locking them up. Governments like it; people who are angry about prisons sometimes refuse it and just say “prison.” You will see it on signs, in news, and in job titles. It is formal government English, not family English. Though actually, the work inside those places is not only punishment — there may be classes and programmes too — but the word still mostly points at the prison system, not at a teacher marking homework.
