A convalescent is someone who is spending time getting well after an illness: no longer in the most dangerous stage, but still weak and not back to ordinary life. The same word is also an adjective: a convalescent patient, a convalescent smile, a convalescent home (a quiet place people go after hospital to rest and regain strength). This is formal and a little old-fashioned. Younger speakers more often say 'someone who is recovering' or 'still getting better'. Though actually, calling someone a convalescent is a bit like putting them in a category — 'the convalescent sat in the garden' — which older writing likes and modern talk often avoids, because it can sound as if the person is only their illness. The adjective use (convalescent home, convalescent care) is still alive in institutional names.
組成From French convalescent, from Latin convalēscēn(t-)s, the present participle of convalēscere ('to become strong or well'). Same family as convalesce: the -ent ending marks 'the one who is doing that'. Works as both noun and adjective.
