Convalescence is the length of time a person spends getting well after an illness — the slow stretch after the worst has passed, when strength is coming back. It can last days, weeks, or months, depending on how ill the person was. This is a formal, slightly old-fashioned noun; in ordinary talk people say recovery or just 'the time I needed to get better'. Doctors still use it, and you will see it in older books. Though actually, convalescence is not the illness itself, and it is not the moment of being . It is the in-between: you are out of danger, but you are not yet yourself. A 'long convalescence' means the getting-better took a long time, not that the person enjoyed a long holiday — even if they spent it somewhere quiet.
組成Borrowed from Middle French convalescence, from Late Latin convalēscentia ('regaining of health'), from the Latin present participle of convalēscere ('to become strong or well'). Same pieces as convalesce: con- + the 'become strong' verb from valēre.
