In older European music, especially the kind played in Bach’s time, the continuo is a bass part that keeps going under the rest of the music. The player — often a harpsichord or organ, with a or bassoon on the low notes — sees a line of low notes with little numbers written under them. Those numbers (figures) show which higher notes, which chords, to fill in. The full name is basso continuo; people also call it figured bass. You will not hear this word outside music class or a concert programme. It is not “continue” said in a fancy way. It is a job in the band: the steady floor the tune stands on.
