Continuance is the state of something going on for a long time — the fact that it does not stop. You see it in rather formal English: the continuance of peace, the continuance of a policy. In everyday talk people usually say it continued or how long it lasted. Though actually, in American law this word has a second, very common job: a judge putting a court case off to a later day. Lawyers ask for a continuance when they need more time. That courtroom use is probably the one you will hear most on US news. The older, quieter sense — “still going on” — is still real.
