A consulate is the building where a consul lives and works — the office you walk into when you need help from your own country while you are abroad. It is smaller and more everyday than an embassy. An embassy is the main mission in the capital, headed by an ambassador; a consulate is often in another city and deals with passports, visas, and citizens in trouble. People say “the American consulate” meaning the building, and a little loosely the staff inside it. In some older or legal talk, consulate can also mean the consul’s rank or time in office, but will almost always meet the building.

From Middle English consulat, from Latin consulātus, from consul + -ātus; partly via French consulat.

組成consul + -ate (a suffix that can form a noun for a rank, office, or the place of that office). From Middle English consulat / consulate, from Latin consulātus; some senses came through French consulat.
