A consul is a government official sent to live in a foreign city to help people from their own country who are living or staying there. The work is practical, not grand: a lost passport, papers, a citizen in trouble with the police, someone who needs to get home. That is different from an ambassador, who represents the whole country to the other government, usually in the capital, and talks about . A large country may have several consuls, one in each big city. In history class you will also meet the older Roman meaning: in ancient Rome, two consuls were elected each year as the top leaders. Same word, a much older job. In ordinary English today, consul almost always means the helper-official abroad. It is a formal, official word; people say it when they mean the post, but they more often walk into “the consulate” than ask to see “the consul” in person.
