To consign something is to send it to a person or a place, especially so that someone else can sell it for you. A painter may consign paintings to a gallery; a factory may consign a box of goods to a shop. In that trade use, the often still owns the goods until they are sold — that arrangement is called consignment. In shipping, to consign a parcel is simply to send it, with a name for who should receive it. The verb is formal; in everyday talk people usually say send, ship, or “leave it with the shop to sell.” People also stretch it in books: to consign something to a , or to history, means to put it away and more or less forget it. That is not the shop-and-warehouse meaning, but you will meet it.
組成From Latin cōnsignō, “furnish with a seal”: con- (together / fully) + signō (mark, sign). It came through Middle French consigner, or straight from Latin. The first idea was “put a seal on it”; later, “send it off under that mark.”
