A kind of Protestant Christianity — the big family of churches that grew from the Reformation, alongside groups like Lutherans and Baptists. In Congregationalism, each local church (the congregation: the people who worship together in one place) is responsible for its own decisions. There is no bishop sitting above them, and no distant office that can order that church to do something. The people of that church choose their pastor and settle their own rules. Though actually the beliefs about God and the Bible are close to many other Protestant churches; what is special is who holds the power — it stays in the local church, not in a chain of bishops (as in Episcopal churches) or in a wider council of elders (as in Presbyterian churches). You meet the word most in history, especially early America and New England. In Taiwan the usual name is 公理宗 or 公理會.
