Used for the same church family as : a kind of Protestant Christianity in which each local congregation makes its own decisions, with no bishop above it. Though actually English speakers use Congregationalist in more than one way, and the person-meaning is very common. As a noun, a Congregationalist is someone who belongs to that church. As an adjective, a Congregationalist church or Congregationalist tradition is one that follows that way of running a church. The - word () names the system; the -ist word often names the person — but people do also stretch -ist to the type of Christianity itself. You will see a capital C when it is the proper name of that church family.
