A coneflower is a wild and garden flower of North America. The middle of the bloom sticks up in a dome or cone — that is the whole reason for the name — with purple or white petals around it, often drooping a little. The famous purple kind is also called echinacea. People in the US grow it for bees and for looks, and they also dry it as a herb; many drink it when they feel a cold coming, though doctors do not all agree that it really helps. In Taiwan you are more likely to meet it on a health-shop shelf than in a field. White coneflowers exist too. Though actually, some garden centres also call related daisy-like plants coneflowers, so the name is a little looser in a seed catalogue than on a medicine label.
