Condemnatory describes words, a tone, or a piece of writing that expresses strong disapproval. A condemnatory statement does not merely report what happened; it blames it and rejects it. A condemnatory look on a parent’s face is the silent version: you can feel the judgement without a speech. It is a formal adjective, at home in news, essays, and official language. You are more likely to read condemnatory remarks than to hear a teenager say the word. Though actually, it is less common than the verb condemn or the noun condemnation. Many careful writers simply say a statement condemning the attack, which is easier. Use condemnatory when you need an adjective in front of a noun: a condemnatory report, a condemnatory speech. It names the flavour of the language — judging, rejecting — not a court sentence by itself. If the words only describe events, they are not condemnatory yet; they become so when they take a moral side and say “this was wrong.”
