Picture a travelling companion. One main thing sets off — a war, a plan, a pay rise — and a second thing walks beside it the whole way. The companion is not the journey itself, and nobody invited it; it is there because the journey is happening. The adjective describes that companion walking alongside; the noun points straight at the companion and names it.
可以想成「結伴同行」的畫面。一件主要的事出發了：一場戰爭、一個計畫、一次加薪。旁邊有另一件事一路跟著走。那個跟班不是主角，也沒有人特地邀請它。它會在，是因為主角在走這條路。形容詞用法是在描述「旁邊有人跟著」；名詞用法則是直接把那個跟班指出來、叫出它的名字。兩種用法看的是同一個畫面，只是鏡頭對準的位置不一樣。

From Latin concomitor, 'to accompany', built from con- ('together') and comes ('companion'), reaching English through Middle French and first attested in 1607. The modern word still carries that picture of something walking along with something else.
來自拉丁文 concomitor（陪同），由 con-（一起）加上 comes（同伴）組成，經中古法文進入英文，最早見於 1607 年。今天的用法還留著那個畫面：有東西一路跟著另一樣東西走。
