A conclave is a private meeting kept secret — the kind where the door is closed and the rest of us are not invited. The most famous one is in the Catholic Church: the cardinals lock themselves away to choose a new pope, and the world waits for the smoke. That locked-room picture is still inside the word. Though actually, newspapers now stretch it to any tight, behind-closed-doors meeting of powerful people: a party picking a leader, a board deciding something they do not want in the papers. It is a formal, slightly dramatic word. An ordinary coffee with friends is not a conclave.

組成From Late Middle English, borrowed from Middle French conclave or from Latin conclāve, “a chamber you can lock”: con- (“together”) + clāvis (“key”). It first named a private room, then the locked room where a pope is chosen, then the secret meeting itself.
