If something is conciliatory, it is done to make the other person less angry and more willing to stop arguing with you. A conciliatory tone. A conciliatory gesture. A conciliatory offer. The word paints the colour of the act, not the whole process: you sound softer, you give a little, you show you do not want the fight to go on. It is a fairly formal, news-and-politics word. Though actually, a conciliatory move is not always sincere — sometimes it is a performance, a way to look reasonable while you still want your own way. Listen for whether the person is truly bending, or only sounding kind.
組成conciliate + -ory, an ending that means “tending to” or “meant to.” So: meant to calm the other side and bring them back toward agreement.
