Composure is the state of feeling calm, or at least calm, especially when something goes wrong. People keep their composure, lose their composure, or try to recover it after a shock. It is not a scientific word, but it is a little formal: in a chat a friend might just say “Stay calm.” Though actually it is as much about the face you show as the feeling inside. A person can be and still hold their composure — voice steady, hands still. The matching adjective is composed, meaning calm in that same outward way. It comes from composing yourself: gathering the parts of you back into order.
