    the mark (,) that you use in writing to show a short pause in a sentence, or to keep the things in a list apart from each other.

    comma 就是英文寫作裡的那個小小的「,」。它有兩個工作：一是在句子中間做一個短短的停頓，念出來的時候會稍微喘一口氣；二是把清單裡的每樣東西隔開，例如 eggs, rice, milk。可以想成它就像一把小剪刀，把一長串字剪成一段一段，讀的人才看得懂——它來自希臘文「剪下來的一小段」。要注意英文的逗號是半形的「,」，後面空一格，跟中文的全形「，」和頓號「、」都不一樣。

You can picture a comma as the small hook you drop into a line of writing to hold two things slightly apart — long enough for the reader to take a short breath, or just enough to stop the items in a list from running into each other.
