When words collocate, they often sit together, and the pair sounds right to English speakers. We say make a mistake, not do a mistake; we say heavy rain, not powerful rain. Language teachers use this word a lot; friends almost never say it in the street. As a verb: “Commit collocates with crime.” As a noun: the partner word itself — “Crime is a collocate of commit.” Though actually, an older meaning is simply “to put things side by side.” You may still meet that in very formal writing, but almost always meet the language meaning.
