1. 1

Colchester is a town in Essex, in the southeast of England, northeast of London. The Romans made it their first capital in Britain, and the town still wears that old layer: a castle, walls, a proud local story. It claims to be the oldest town in the UK. Though actually, “oldest” is a fight other places like to join, so treat that as Colchester’s boast — it is very old, and it wants you to know. It is not a huge city. The University of Essex is there, so you will also meet the name on university pages and in student talk.
