To cohabit is to live with someone as a couple, including a sexual relationship, without being married. It is a calm, rather official word: you find it in law, news, and sociology, not in a love song. In ordinary talk people say they live together. The usual pattern is cohabit with someone. This sense is about partners, not about sharing a flat with a friend or a ; roommates are not cohabiting in this meaning, even if they share a kitchen. The word used to sound more judging than it does now. Today many writers use it as a plain fact about how people live. There is a wider, rarer use — two groups or animals living in the same place — but the meaning you will be tested on is the couple.
