The coastline is the edge where land meets the sea, especially that edge as a shape — the line you see from a plane, on a map, or in a photo from above. A coastline can be smooth, rocky, or full of bays and inlets. People talk about a rugged coastline or a coastline of several hundred . Though actually, the coast is the place itself (you go to the coast); the coastline is more the outline of that edge. You do not swim in the coastline, and it is not quite the same as a beach, which is only the sandy or part.
