The shoreline is the place where land meets a big piece of water — the sea, an ocean, or a lake. If you walk along it, you are walking the edge. People use it for the whole stretch of that edge, not just one beach: a rocky shoreline, a muddy one, a shoreline eaten by a storm. Though actually, in everyday talk, shore, beach, and coast get mixed. A beach is usually sand or stones where you sit; a shore is the land next to the water, sand or not; the shoreline is more like the line itself, as if you drew it on a map. Coastline is very close, but people mostly save coastline for the sea, not for a lake. News and science like shoreline when they talk about it moving — the water rising, or taking the land away.
